Last night was a first...
So last night I attended a "Mormon wedding reception" and let me tell you it was completely different than the parties I am used to. I am used to lots of loud people, dancing, drinking, music and lots of food! There was none of that!
After walking around for 25 minutes in downtown Salt Lake trying to find the reception place, we finally found the conference room (yes it was held in a conference room). We had been told the dress was casual so my friends and I were clad in our best jeans and polos. When we showed up all of the other guests were wearing real wedding type attire...suits, frilly dresses etc. So we already stuck out like a sore thumb...oh yeah and we knew no one else in the room.
So we waited in line to see the happy couple and hit the food table. There was a bowl of delicious dip and nacho chips, a fruit spread (pineapples, melons, grapes etc), a veggie tray, some chocolate covered strawberries...and that was it. For a drink we were served water in a punch bowl with lemon and lime slices in it. Yes, water. It was definitely a new cultural experience for me. Of course my group of friends then got rowdy and loud because that's what we do when we all get together. It was all fun and games until my friend Jeremy decided to joke with the groom about how the water was spiked and it made him want to get naked. He was joking of course, but the uptight mormon bishop standing behind him didn't think it was so funny. The whole time our group felt like we were being judged (because we were) and that we were heathens (because we are...oh no not beer!) It was definitely uncomfortable. After a bit we decided we had had about all the uptightness we could stand and decided to head to the Bayou for some beers and sweet potato fries!! As I was leaving the groom pulled me aside and told me to have fun and drink for him (since he is now mormon and is no longer allowed to have fun). After an event like that it definitely made me appreciate the culture I come from and how I know that if I ever decide to get married...it's going to be a big damn party!! Cause that's how we do it where I'm from.
In other news, I am now a status member on United. In the first 6 months of 2008 I flew 25,000 miles. Go me. Really status doesn't mean crap though...all it means is that I can get 6 inches of extra leg room for free. I'm not even cool enough to be allowed into their lounges at the airports. You have to pay an additional huge chunk of money to do that. Stupid airlines.
I did get to spend 8 days in the sunny state of Florida...well mostly sunny I guess. I got back on a golf course and found that the elbow is indeed healed enough to golf...so I found a way to keep my sanity out here in Utah until boarding season. Although with all the trips I have coming up, keeping my sanity will probably not be an issue because I will never be here.
DC in 8 days!
That is all!

That definitely sounds like a unique experience...
I think one of the weddings I went to last summer was technically Mormon... but not so much that there wasn't an open bar. Egads.
Let us know if you want to hang out when you're here in DC!
Sounds like Tom and Shiela's wedding to me. Remember that??
